RE: General Membership Meeting Summary Report for March 16, 2022
The new season is a great reason to make and keep resolutions. Whether it’s eating right or cleaning out the garage, here are some tips for making and keeping resolutions.
The following notes represent my personal summary of the March General Membership Meeting and ARE NOT OFFICIAL MINUTES. They are for the express purpose of keeping the members informed in a timely fashion. Since minutes must be approved at a subsequent General Membership Meeting, any updates which would require the use of the actual minutes would result in updates being one-month old.
The following was approved at the March meeting:
- Minutes of the February 16th, 2022 meeting
- The financial statement ending February 2022 and the disbursements of $75,764.02. Our disbursements were in excess of our receipts by $5,085.37. This resulted in our General Account being positive by $225,221.27.
The following was approved at the March meeting:
- Motion – Approve a donation of $395.00 plus tax to sponsor the student handbook for Sault College for 2022-2023
- Motion – Approve a donation of $495.00 plus tax to sponsor the student handbook for Algoma University for 2022-2023
- Motion – Approve a donation of $1,000.00 plus tax to sponsor Country Legends Tribute Tour in support of Thrive – Child Development Centre Foundation
- Motion – Approve a donation of $700.00 plus tax to support Camp Maple Leaf that gives children of military families and children living with unique life challenges a safe, fun-filled and life changing summer camp experience
- Motion – Approve a donation of $1000.00 of feminine products to distribute to local shelters
- Motion - Approve the cost of $3500.00 plus tax to design a new website for Local 2251
- Motion - Approve a donation of $1000.00 to the Red Cross in support of Ukraine
- Motion - Approve a donation of $1000.00 to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste Marie

President, Michael Da Prat reported the following:
- Mike announced that there would be two Special Membership Meetings held on April 5th, 2022 at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm for the Plate and Strip Department. Meetings will be held at the Marconi Event Centre.
- Topics to be discussed will be:
- Lack of information regarding Project Aurora
- Why Sizer/Gauger/106” Hotmill Utilityman/Observer Project Aurora grievances behind?
- What is the timeline for these grievances to be heard?
- Job Placement identified in order to get training started for Plate Modernization.
- Mike announced that nominations for the position of Recording Secretary for the remaining term until May 2024 will take place at the next General Membership Meeting on April 20th, 2022.
- He also stated that the Election Committee will be selected at the next General Membership Meeting.
- Mike stated that we had a request for applications for anyone that would like to be selected for the Health and Safety Committee. The deadline closed on March 15th, 2022.
- He stated that we also had a request for applications for any member that would like to work on the Occupational Disease/WSIB Committee. Deadline for applications is March 25th, 2022.
- Mike spoke about the EAF.
- He stated that the audits would be done March 28th – April 8th depending on getting Trustees released.
- Mike also reported on the following:
- This is a negotiation year. There are a large number of members that have never experienced negotiations. The following process has commenced.
- Surveys were sent to our members at their home at the beginning of November, 2021.
- Surveys were processed and proposals were drafted from the concerns of our members.
- The executive and negotiating committee have been meeting and continues to meet to draft proposals from executive concerns and the subject matter of grievances.
- Meetings will be schedule to present negotiation proposals to the members to get their approval.
- Notice will be sent to the Company that the Union is prepared to negotiate. This notice must be delivered by May 1, 2022.
- It may become necessary to obtain a strike mandate from the members. The negotiation committee will make that decision.
- In order to obtain a strike mandate, the negotiating committee will schedule 3 special meetings of the general membership.
- A secret ballot vote will take place at a location selected by the negotiating committee.
- The strike mandate will give the negotiating committee the authority to call a strike if deemed necessary.
- A number of preparations have to take place to prepare for a strike if it becomes necessary.
- The city and vendors, contractors etc. have to be noticed if a strike will take place.
- Trailers, generators etc. have to be arranged for.
- Fire barrels, wood etc.
- City permission for locations of trailers and porta potties.
- Arrangements for banks to provide direct deposit payment to our members etc.
- Our website is currently out of service. We have a website designer creating a new one for us.
